Douglas first contacted Art in 1997 to thank him for writing “Forming Warm Ideas” and to tell him about using the article in a research class he was teaching. Over the next few years, they emailed each other often, sharing ideas, writings, and stories. They met for the first time in person in January of 2000, when Douglas and his wife and colleague, Shelley Green, joined Art and Carolyn Ellis on a panel at the Couch/Stone Symposium on Ethnography for the Twenty-First Century in St Petersburg, Florida. Their friendship and conversations continue to deepen and unfold via email and the occasional visit.
